March 29 - April 10, 2011 This
was a ~12 day vacation with brothers Rich and Tom, visiting Belize and
the
Mayan ruins at Tikal (in Guatemala). This was not strictly a birding
trip, but the binoculars and camera were always ready. We spent
2
days birding at Crooked Tree Lagoon in Belize and in the nearby Mayan
ruins of Lamanai, then traveled to the Lighthouse Reef atoll (~50
miles offshore, on a tiny island), where we were able to watch the
sizeable booby and frigatebird colony. After returning to the
mainland, we traveled to the western side of Belize for 5 more days
(including two nights in Tikal), birding the highlands and the ruins.
Overall, we identified ~200 species, with 50 lifers and ~35 new photo
species. A detailed description of the trip should be posted
soon. Other non-birding photos from the trip can be found HERE.
